Board Members: Van Newberry, Elaine Stevens, Greg Holtgrewe, Sean Walsh, Lisa Oetjen (Mark Davis was a late arrival)
Guests: Brett Draffen, Jack Butler, Bob Martin

The minutes of the April 12, 2004 meeting were distributed and were available in hard copy format at the meeting. Van Newberry made a motion to approve the minutes as printed. Sean Walsh seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
Upward Soccer Program
Bob Martin from Lone Oak First Baptist Church was present to explain to MCYSA about the Upward Soccer Program and formally request use of MCYSA facilities for the program.
The proposals are as follows: Dates for the program are Saturdays during September through October; age divisions of third through sixth grade; coed team formation; program provides a devotional for the children and parents at the half.
Mr. Martin stressed the main emphasis of the Upward program is “Every child is a winner.” He has projected for 100 participants and the formation of 8 to 10 teams. The children are grouped by evaluations and skill levels and Lone Oak First Baptist Church provides officials for the games. Upward would need to use MYCSA’s U-10 fields only. Van questioned liability and stated he would check on this issue and respond to Mr. Martin at the next board meeting. Van is also checking on the logistics of Upward and presenting recommendations at the next meeting. Elaine will establish the number of games possible and maintenance costs for Upward participants.
Monetary Donation to MCYSA
Jack Butler presented the association with a $100.00 donation from A & K by Mike McDowell. Jack asked the association to send a thank you letter to Mr. McDowell for this generous gift. Elaine volunteered to write and send the letter.
Email to MCYSA Board Members
All board members received an email from Cindy Schneider. Elaine read aloud the email for those present. The discussion stalled and changed to concerns Jack Butler had about the complex appearance. Jack stated he was embarrassed by the way the complex looked. He also raised an issue about how the mowing was being taken care of, currently Greg and Elaine Stevens are in charge of maintaining mowing. Mr. Butler expressed his concerns to the board and left the meeting in order for the board to carry on with other business.
U-6 Field Conditions
Due to recent bad weather conditions, one of the U-6 fields needs to be moved. Greg Holtgrewe made the motion to relocate a field and Van seconded. Greg will reconfigure the U-6 area and make the new field on Friday, May 7, 2004. Greg H. also stated a concern regarding the Kit-Mo location near the U-6 fields. The current location required young players and also spectators to cross the road in a high traffic area. Sean Walsh will order another Kit-Mo and inform vendor on exact location of placement. Movement of the Kit-Mo was a safety concern expressed by several parents to board members. In Favor - All Opposed - None.
Possible New Mower Purchase
Elaine presented the board with the option of purchasing a new mower for MCYSA. In the past three weeks, $165.00 has been spent on parts for the current mower. Elaine stated there have been numerous problems with the mower this season and it is currently in “ill repair.” Elaine has been comparison shopping for various models for approximately one month. Richard’s Small Engines has offered MCYSA the following: 2004 Dixie Chopper, 60” cut at $5200.00 with maintenance contract available. Motion by Sean Walsh to purchase item and Greg Holtgrewe seconded. In Favor - All. Opposed - None.
Sean has brochures for MLS (Major League Soccer) camp ready to distribute to teams. Housing is needed for the coaches presenting the clinic. Interested sponsors should contact Sean for information. Dates for the camp are June 6 - June 10, 2004 with a coaching clinic being held on Saturday, June 10. The cost per participant is $98.00 for morning or evening sessions.
Dave Asprey Coaching Clinics
Mark opened a discussion about using Dave Asprey for coaching education. Four teams (recreational or competitive) are needed and MCYSA would cover half of the cost. A host family would be needed for six weeks for the instructor. Greg H. stated he would like to see this spread out over the entire association somehow. He questioned about every team getting use of the coach. Mark stated at this point, the discussion should be tabled for a future meeting. Sean stated he is willing to pursue the issue and get coaches for the program.
Mark asked board members and guests to comment on the Silent Saturday held by MCYSA this past spring season. The comments were as follows: Mark Davis - Wishes to continue with Silent Saturday. Negative comments were received but we have over 700 kids and approximately 12 responses. He wants to work out all details before next Silent Saturday is held. Van Newberry - Great in the U-12 division. Sean Walsh - Feels U-6 Needs to be exempt. No problems. Lisa Oetjen - No comment, no game played due to inclement weather. Elaine Stevens - Stayed in car because no on was playing at the time she was at the complex. Felt Silent Saturday was held too early in the season and received comments from parents about referee not knowing the rules for Silent Saturday. Greg Holtgrewe - Good comments for the U-6 and U-8 divisions from parents but l limited effect due to the rain. Brett Draffen - Stated the U-6 parents he spoke with did not like Silent Saturday and felt it should not include U-6. Also felt was held too early in the season.
Van commented the board had plenty of time to discussed Silent Saturday before next season.
Closing Business Comments
A concern was brought to the board regarding Coach Tim Jones having an unregistered player on his team during a game at the complex. Coach Jones was questioned about the player and it was discovered the player had been registered with another league and had been brought in for a game as a guest player.
Mark is writing a letter to coach Alex Argotte regarding his behavior during a game and defiance toward the center referee’s decision.
Mark questioned the board about allowing Mid Continent College use of MCYSA facilities for a clinic. The board was asked to vote on the issue. In Favor - 5. Opposed - 1.
